Winter Skincare Tip

ERIN WILLIS, Staff Writer

The seasons change, and with that skincare should change too. The cold weather can make skin dry and cracked, so the best thing to do is moisturize. Preventative measures are essential to keeping your skin soft and flake-free. Chapstick, for the lips, Head and Shoulders, for the hair and lotion, for the skin.

However, like many skin products, moisturizer needs to be highly personalized. For dry skin, the moisturizer needs to have an extra boost of hyaluronic acid and dimethicone to keep moisture locked into the skin. For oily skin it is still important to use moisturizer despite fears of encouraging the oil. Instead of using oil-based moisturizers, like coconut oil or argan oil, try using water based. For combination skin balance between these two is the best. Salicylic acid and silica are used to control oil and glycerin and hyaluronic acid are used as oil-free hydration. Combination skin is where the T-Zone (forehead and nose) are the most likely to oil while the other parts remain dry.

As a person with oily skin, I have used many different moisturizers to find what works for me. Skin care needs to be tailored to the specific person, meaning experimentation might be needed to find the right kind. What one person swears by may do nothing for you.

My favorite moisturizer for myself is the Neutrogena Hydro-Boost Water Gel, which on the website says for dry skin but uses hyaluronic acid for oil-free moisture. The entire Neutrogena line of moisturizers contain enough of a variety to help with oily, dry, and combination skin.

For dry skin, Neutrogena® Hydro Boost Gel-Cream with Hyaluronic Acid for Extra-Dry Skin

For acne prone skin, Non-Comedogenic Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Acne Face Moisturizer with Salicylic Acid.

With sunscreen, which is very important to use when going out, if not every day, Neutrogena® Hydro Boost City Shield™ Water Gel Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 25.
